International demand for snails

The main land snail-consuming countries, of the various species and in their different presentations, are the European Union countries highlighting France, Italy and Spain. France is the main consumer with an annual demand of 100,000 tons. It’s estimated that France imports about 71% of the global export of snails, followed by Spain 8% and Italy 6%.

In France and Italy, the species Helix pomatia and Helix aspersa are the ones with highest import volumes, because those countries are not able to satisfy their demand with local production.

In Spain’s case, it’s inferred that they primarily import Helix aspersa, because their main supplier is Morocco and that country produces only that species. The snail comes mainly from importing and wild harvesting. It’s estimated that only 6% is obtained from snail farming also known as Heliciculture.
